21_21 DESIGN SIGHT was born as a venue to redirect our eyes to everyday things and events, and create various proposals and communicate numerous discoveries from a design point of view. Founded by Issey Miyake, the venue opened in 2007 to engage people from all walks of life and nurture their understanding and interest in design. With a diverse program focused on exhibitions, visitors can discover the delights of design and enjoy surprising new experiences. Taku Satoh was appointed overall director in 2017. 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT continues its activities through perspectives ("sights") that discover and create the future of design as culture.

Designed by Tadao Ando. Highlighting Issey Miyake's concept in clothing design of "A Piece of Cloth," Ando devised the idea of the roof as one sheet of folded steel. In addition to the roof, the two sides of the building incorporate Japan's world-leading technology. 80% of the volume of the structure is built underground where a naturally lit sunken court creates a dynamic atmosphere.

Since it opened in 2017, Gallery 3 has been a presentation space dedicated to design. Exhibits by domestic and foreign corporations, as well as programs held in collaboration with educational and cultural institutions, explore the more diverse design perspectives.
The directors of 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT, founded by Issey Miyake, are currently two designers who are acquainted with the contemporary state of design and the creative scene, Taku Satoh, and Naoto Fukasawa. They are continually reviewing program planning with the associate director, Noriko Kawakami.
